Public sector organisations have made significant strides in digital transformation over the past decade. By tackling technical debt and modernising their IT infrastructure, these organisations now have access to richer and more diverse data than ever before. However, one challenge remains: how can they harness this wealth of data to drive faster, more informed decision-making and deliver more innovative, more effective public services? For many, integrating AI into their data strategies is not just a solution but a critical necessity to unlocking new possibilities.

Public Service Data Live 2024

At the recent Public Service Data Live conference, we had the opportunity to engage with public sector professionals to explore the most pressing challenges they face in the evolving landscape of data and AI. As social and economic disruptors reshape citizen expectations, public services must be more agile, accessible, and impactful than ever. The ability to merge robust data management with AI advancements is key to achieving this, offering the potential to enhance citizen services and engagement radically. AI can transform the public sector’s service delivery by automating routine tasks, streamlining operations, and enabling deeper, data-driven insights.

In our discussions, three major themes emerged:

  1. Addressing Disparate Systems

One of the biggest challenges we’ve identified during our conversations here is the issue of disparate systems. Many organisations are still grappling with legacy technology, resulting in fragmented data spread across multiple platforms. This leads to duplicate information and difficulty in identifying what’s accurate. We’ve been demonstrating how CloudSource has solved this challenge by migrating the entire IT estate to the Microsoft tech stack. For example, we’ve merged as many as ten separate systems into a single, unified platform, streamlining operations and making data more reliable. By doing so, organisations can unlock the full potential of their data with seamless connectivity.

  1. Improving Data Quality

Another key challenge we’ve been discussing is data quality. While many public sector organisations are data-rich, they often struggle with disorganised or decaying data. The rapid pace of digital transformation to reduce technical debt has left them with vast amounts of data but without a strategy to manage and optimise it. We’ve showcased how CloudSource tackles this issue by leveraging tools like Microsoft Fabric to create comprehensive data lakes. This approach allows organisations to deduplicate, validate, and clean their data significantly. With high-quality, reliable data, decision-makers can finally gain the necessary insights to make informed, impactful decisions.

  1. Getting Started with AI

The third challenge we’ve identified is getting started with AI. Public sector organisations are ahead of the curve in their digital transformation journey, building a solid foundation with Digital, Data, and Technology (DDaT). However, they must adopt AI solutions built on this sturdy DDaT base to capitalise fully on this progress. Generative AI can transform public service delivery, making it more intelligent, efficient, and ethical. Our advice to organisations is to engage with a trusted partner like CloudSource to unlock the potential of AI. Through our AI Ignite Catalyst programme, we help identify critical hotspots and surface AI opportunities, ensuring that public sector organisations can confidently take the next step in their AI journey.
